LETTER: Protect Colorado's wilderness areas

Colorado Daily (CO)

As gas prices continue to rise, Colorado has seen a renewed effort to open our state's pristine wilderness to energy development from corporate interests. Increasing our oil and gas drilling in the state is merely a band-aid for the much graver, more long-term issue of our dependence on non-renewable energy resources. What is more, the wilderness, the defining characteristic of our great state, stands only to lose from increased development. Over the next 6 years, it's expected that our active oil and gas wells will double from 30,000 to 60,000, opening some of our most treasured places like the Roan Plateau, the Vermillion Basin, and Browns Canyon to the plunderings of corporate America.

As Coloradans, we must stand-up and protect what is ours to protect -for ourselves, the world and future generations. Colorado's elected officials need to represent our interests, not those of profit-hungry corporate interests.
