Save Alaska’s Teshekpuk Lake!

Take Action
Caribou herd along Teshekpuk Lake shore

Alaska's Teshekpuk Lake is on the verge of being leased for oil development, imperiling one of the world's most ecologically important wetland complexes. Literally hundreds of species of migratory bird from six continents depend on the health of these wetlands as a refuge during their long journeys. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is now planning to open these sensitive wetland habitats to oil and gas drilling. Tell the BLM that Teshekpuk Lake is off-limits! Take Action Now! You may remember this scenario from a year ago, before the U.S. District Court of the Ninth Circuit ruled that the BLM's environmental studies did not adequately consider the cumulative environmental impacts leasing might have on the land and wildlife. Now, the BLM's new plan is out and, while it claims to take new factors into consideration, it proposes much of the same disastrous plans rejected last year by scientists, native communities, Members of Congress, sportsmen and conservation groups alike, without citing a preferred alternative. The proposed lease sale has even drawn criticism from the Environmental Protection Acency and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service because of its likely impact on environmental values. With no time to waste, contact the BLM today and ask them to stop the leases. Habitat for 45,000 caribou, 60,000 geese, and countless millions of migratory birds is at stake. Although the law establishing the National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska called for "maximum protection" for fish and wildlife, the Bush Administration has blatantly ignored their responsibility to preserve this internationally renowned wildlife habitat. Tell Secretary of Interior Dirk Kempthorne that plans to lease new areas around Teshekpuk Lake should be canceled immediately.
